Math Olympiad
A 25
Year Tradition

Learning to solve problems is the
underlying reason for studying mathematics.
It is the principal mathematical
skill that needs to be developed in children.
Math Olympiad is an interschool
competition which is held five times during the school year at monthly
intervals beginning in November and continuing on into March.
Each contest contains five problems
with specified time limits.
The value of the Olympiad problems
is related to their special appeal to reasoning, creativity, resourcefulness,
ingenuity, and important principles of mathematics.
The math problems allow students to:
- stimulate students
interest and enthusiasm for
problem solving
- broaden mathematical intuition and
develop “brain power”
- introduce students to interesting
and
important mathematical ideas
- allow students to experience the
satisfaction
and fun of creative problem solving
Students in Grades 4-6 are invited
to tryout for the
Porter Math Olympiad Team in the
beginning of October.
Practices are held after school and
run through the month of March.
