Horace W. Porter School
July 14, 2004
To the Parent/Guardian of __________________________,
Your son/daughter has been placed in the 7th grade Pre-Algebra mathematics
class for the fall of 2004. This is the fast-paced math class.
Students in this class will be placed in the Algebra I class next year
provided that they meet the following criteria below:
-
A grade point average of 92% of all 4 terms (and the mid-term and final
assessment).
-
Teacher recommendation: This includes such attributes as self-advocacy,
maturity, willingness to ask questions and ability to handle the pace.
-
Work Habits: This includes work completion habits, performance on assessments,
intrinsic motivation and willingness to “go the extra mile”.
-
Mathematical screenings: This includes CMT scores, performance on various
math contests, and scores on any school-wide algebra readiness screenings.
It is important to note that the grade point average, the classroom teacher
recommendation and the student’s work habits will be the strongest criteria
for consideration. A student my be put on a “watch list” and/or placed
in the grade level math class either during the this year or for the following
year if there is some doubt as to their placement in the advanced
class. The student will be watched carefully by the teacher for consideration
of “moving up” based on classroom performance.
If you should have any questions, concerning your son or daughter’s
math placement, please feel free to call the school to discuss this with
either myself or our principal.
Sincerely,
