Horace W. Porter

Laura Lawton:   I moved to Columbia when I was 4 years old and attended Horace W. Porter School months later, attending half day Kindergarten in the very classroom that I teach in everyday! I graduated from Windham High School and attended Bryant College (now University) ECSU and Sacred Heart University to achieve my Bachelor's degree and Masters in Education.  From 1996-2006 I taught at Maple Street School in Rockville/Vernon, CT., mainly as a half day Kindergarten teacher (50 students per year!), and I also 4 years as a second grade teacher and my last year as a full day Kindergarten teacher.  I was hired as a Kindergarten teacher at Porter School in August 2006 and in the fall of 2008 our Kindergarten program became full day. This year, 2018-2019, is my 23rd year teaching and 13th year teaching here at Porter School, which I think is a great place to work!

Both my parents were educators and my father went on to be an assistant principal at Michael D. Fox School in Hartford for 30 years. Like my parents and some of my favorite teachers from Porter School, including Margaret Russell and the late, great Al Haberern, I knew at a young age that I wanted to be a teacher.  I LOVE teaching Kindergartners everyday! I am blessed to spend my days watching them continuously grow and change into very capable readers and writers, as well as becoming math experts.  I am a single mother of 18 year old triplets, Sarah, Kathryn and Michael. In my free time I love to be at the beach and to spend time with family and friends.  My claim to fame is being the sister of "Mark The Shark" who has been affiliated with the radio station 96.5 WTIC FM for 30 years. I have a very big 6 1/2 year old English Cream Golden Retriever named "Fenway"--named after my favorite home field, Fenway Park....and I am a die hard Red Sox fan!!
