CONNECTICUT COMMON CORE STATE STANDARDS

The Connecticut Common Core for 6th grade mathematics content focuses on five domains:

1. The Number System - Students will apply and extend prior learning of operations with rational numbers, such as fractions, to add, subtract, multiply, and divide.

2. Geometry - Students will describe and construct various 2D and 3D figures, as well as solve real-life situations involving geometric concepts such as area, surface area, and volume.

3. Ratios & Proportional Relationships- Students will be able to recognize and represent proportional relationships between quantities and use ratio concepts and ratio reasoning to solve problems.

4. Expressions and Equations- Students will use properties of operations to generate equivalent expressions and solve real-life problems using numerical and algebraic expressions and equations.

5. Statistics and Probability- Students will develop an understanding of statistical variability and be able to summarize and describe distributions.

MATHEMATICAL PRACTICES

The Standards of Mathematical Practices that have been adopted as part of the CCSS are designed to describe a variety of expertise that all mathematical educators seek to develop in their students. With these standards, students are expected to:

1. Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them.

2. Reason abstractly and quantitatively

3. Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others.

4. Model with mathematics.

5. Use appropriate tools strategically.

6. Attend to precision.

7. Look for and make use of structure.

8. Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning.
