MTSS
Multi-Tiered System of Supports
MTSS is a proactive and preventative framework comprised of four essential components screening, progress monitoring, multi-tiered interventions and data based decision making. MTSS integrates data and instruction to maximize student achievement and support students social emotional and behavioral needs.
MTSS utilizes a strength based perspective in addressing academic needs in the areas of reading and math and behavioral needs. A continuum of support is developed by school districts and programs to meet the needs of the children they serve.
The MTSS framework has three tiers. Each tier provides differing kinds and degrees of support.
Tier 1
All children receive high quality curriculum and instruction in the general education classroom or program.
Tier 2
The school or program provides help for children who need more support than they are receiving from the general curriculum. This support usually occurs in a small group pull-out setting with specific goals set for each child.
Tier 3
The school or program provides more individualized instruction for children who need the most support. This support usually occurs more frequently in either a small group or individual pull-out setting with specific goals set for each child.
Math SRBI Tiers 2 & 3
Tier 2 and Tier 3 Math SRBI take place in addition to the regularly scheduled math time. A student is determined to be in need of these levels of math support in several ways. District assessments (i-Ready Math) are given school wide in September, February, and May. Discussions with classroom teachers are ongoing and referrals are noted.
If the data shows that the student has significant weaknesses, individual diagnostic testing is done by SRBI teachers. Meetings with administration take place in September, February, and June to review data and make placement decisions. At this time students may need to begin initial or continued Tier 2 support, move to Tier 3 support implemented by an SRBI interventionist, or be exited from support services.
Instructional materials consist of a combination of resources in text form, directly from the Ready Math Program, or online and are individualized to meet each students' needs.
