Hola,

My name is Señorita Ancona and it is my pleasure to introduce myself as the K-3 Horace W. Porter Spanish Teacher.  I hope students have come home and shared a bit about what they have been learning in Spanish class.  Below are some links to what we have been working on and will continue to work on for the next few weeks. Feel free to reinforce learning at home and please email me any questions you may have at mancona@hwporter.org.  Class lessons involve lots of singing, dancing, and hands-on fun using teaching techniques called “Comprehensible Input” (CI) and “Total Physical Response” (TPR).  For more information about how these teaching styles work, please refer to these articles:

3rd - Verbs, likes and dislikes

Starting November 14th we will begin new units.  As those units unfold, they will be posted here.  Have a great school year!

Spanish (Grades 1, 2, 3, 4, 7) - Mrs. Laurie Marks

Laurie Marks
Lmarks@hwporter.org

Hola,

My name is Sra. Marks and I have the pleasure of teaching Spanish to 4th through 8th grade this year. Each grade has a Google Classroom that lets students and parents know what is happening in class. The 5th through 7th grade classes will meet 4 or 5 days a week for a trimester. The 4th grade classes meet with me once a week for the entire year and 8th grade has Spanish twice a week for the entire year.

Grade 4 has been working on the alphabet, colors and shapes in Spanish. They will be moving on to days of the week, months of the year and weather in the next several weeks. I have added resources to each Google classroom with notes that we have been using or will be using. I have also added practice activities for students to review colors and shapes with a variety of fun activities. Please ask your child about class or check Google classroom with them.

Grade 5 will be reviewing some of the previous materials so that I am sure they have a good understanding of material. Currently Mrs. Traber’s homeroom has a Google classroom set up and I will be adding the other 2 classes in a few weeks. Grade 5 material includes the alphabet and spelling words in Spanish, a review of colors and shapes, numbers to 100, days of the week and months of the year, weather conditions, and foods. Students will be able to ask and answer a variety of questions as well as tell what foods they like or do not like. In Google Classroom you will find resources and practice activities on the concepts that we have covered or will cover.

Grade 6 material includes a review of the alphabet, colors, shapes and numbers to 100. The units include weather expressions, the subject pronouns, the verb Ser and classroom items with definite and indefinite articles and adjective agreement. Spanish IXL is also used to practice skills along with Edpuzzle and Kahoot Challenges. The current group of 6th grade students will continue to have access to IXL  in Spanish. I will let the students know what lessons they may practice to maintain their learning. The group that I will have for the third trimester will be set up with a Google Classroom in the next month or so with suggested IXL activities that they can practice before coming to Spanish.

Grade 7 material includes a review of articles, adjective agreement and the verb Ser. The units include the verb tener (to have) with family members, question words, the verb gustar with activities or items, the verb Ir (to go) and Estar (to be) with classroom items. . Spanish IXL is also used to practice skills along with Edpuzzle and Kahoot Challenges. The current group of 7th grade students will continue to have access to IXL  in Spanish. I will let the students know what lessons they may practice to maintain their learning. The group that I will have for the third trimester will be set up with a Google Classroom in the next month or so with suggested IXL activities that they can practice before coming to Spanish.

Grade 8 students have been working on a variety of verbs and vocabulary to use with reviewing subject pronouns, article and adjective agreement. They have used the verb gustar with activities and items, and classroom items with regular present tense verbs. We will continue to practice subject pronouns, articles and adjective agreement with any new verbs taught. New vocabulary such as classroom items and places will be used to review previously taught verbs as well as new ones. Students also have Spanish IXL to reinforce their learning of grammar and vocabulary.
